(2002-4) Common aspects in all modules1. Finding the right questions: Each module begins with the subject presented (Footprints, Bhopal, Plastic, Water) and the students saying/writing what they already knew about it, think they know about it, and what they DO NOT KNOW. Here it is very important to emphasize the idea that it is not bad to say ‘I do not know’, but rather good and leading to curiosity. At the end of each module, we look again at what we knew, and what we did not know. 2. Teaching English Each module uses the story to teach aspects of English vocabulary and grammar. Not the other way round. 3. Using cartoon and drawing All modules use images and flow charts as well as words. Images to convey important concepts (for example the water cycle) is not only important for students for whom English is a 2nd language, but for all of us, moving from words to spacial understanding. 4. Using drama and play All modules use drama as either a summary or an aspect of the study. Students working in groups, talking conversation English, organizing themselves, getting their heads around the story. 5. Cross referencing other subjects All modules move freely into the other curriculum disciplines to dissolve these boarders and work in circles. All is connected! For example: geology for oil (plastic), water-cycle and water science for water; maths for understanding the importance of volumes for the plastic industry; pottery for clay kullhuds; history for Bhopal |
